Anne Marie was a young peasant girl, she had short blonde hair that went down to her shoulders. She was a sweet girl, she kind and considerate to all. She did have her weird quirks though she absolutely loathed shoes, even as a child she felt restricted when wearing them so she often went around barefooted.
It was in Alma a small city in Kansas. There was not a lot of things to do there except for help on the farm, watched some of the neighbor children, and go to church on Sundays. Anne Marie lived in a family home with her mom and dad, they lived just a little ways from the town running their farm.
Her dad was a kind man that always pushed his daughter to do the right thing. His words of encouragement were all Anne ever needed after having a bad day. Her mother on the other had always made her take proper lady lesson for her to be able to wed to a nice young lad one day.
Anne Marie had many suitors form her small little town as well as the next town over, but Anne Marie thought to save her until her father had picked out the right man for her. Her father had never let her down before so she always trusted him with his decision.
Since many of the young men fancied her she had only one friend her name was Rosa Sterling. She was the exact opposite of Anne. She was neither mean nor cruel but she was the elegant lady that Anne's mother wanted her to be so her mother did not mind.
Rosa also had a lot of suitors but they came from Topeka, the capital of their fair land. She always tagged along where ever Anna Marie had gone to make sure she stayed out of trouble. But of course that never happened.
"Anne Marie?!" Rosa called as she came into the barn house looking for her friend. She was shocked to see when she saw her friend inside a Barrel of grapes and were stomping hard on them with her feet.
"What in heaven's name are you doing? Get out of there right now Anne Marie." Rosa said as she quickly walked over to her friend to grab her friends arm.
"Oh, Good day Rosa." Anne Marie said as she smiled at her.
"What are you doing in there come out of there now, you’re going to ruin your dress." Rosa pleaded.
"It’s already ripped though." Anne Marie says.
"How did it get ripped this time?" Rosa asked as she let out a heavy sigh.
"Well it got stuck in the crack of the Barrel, when I was about to crush the grapes." Anna Marie answers.
"Why were you even trying to crush the grapes anyway?" Countess asked.
"Well Billy-Bob said that I could not beat him at a grape crushing contest at the fall festival, I said I could prove him wrong." Anne Marie tells here.
“Honestly Anne Marie, you are a lady you much act as such.” Rosa tells her.
“Oh come on Rosa don’t be such a scare crow.” Anne Marie says, Rosa turned to look at her outraged.
“I am certainly not a Scarecrow, Anne Marie.” says before sticking her nose up into the air.
“Oh come on you know it was just a joke.” Anne Marie says as she hopped out of the Barrel and landed next to her friend.
Rosa says nothing before letting out a heavy sigh she turned to her friend and said, “Let’s get you cleaned up before your mother comes in and sees you like this she will faint when she sees the rip in your dress.”
“Alright.” Anne Marie says as she walks away, “But will still enter in the contest.”
Rosa sighed as she shook her head as they headed for a nearby stream to wash Anne Marie off.
